Pets and the Paranormal: A Medium’s Perspective

Our pets are more sensitive to spirit than we are!

They can be excellent sentinels to alert us of something going on in the home or location like a spirit visitation or residual activity.

Most often I am told about dogs who are responding to something unseen in the home, but cats and even horses also have been reported to respond to spirit presences!

My own personal experience of this is with my horse named Rosie. Growing up I would go trail riding alone with her a lot. To get to the trailhead in the woods we had to walk through a back field where horses on the farm had been buried. Without fail, every time she passed the burial area she would snort and get tense and then after passing by the area she would immediately calm down. I knew she sensed the horses there.

I was also called to a house reading where not only had the homeowner seen unexplained lights in their bedroom, but their dog would often look up at the second-floor bedroom from the first floor when no one was upstairs and would growl at a doorway in the bedroom.

Why is it that animals seem to be more sensitive to sensing the unseen!?

Animals are by far more energetically sensitive than humans. They have to be in order to survive. We have lost a lot of our instincts, intuition, and sensitivities because of our current evolutionary lifestyles which have dulled our awarenesses. This is beginning to change for us, but that is a whole separate blog post.

Dogs were domesticated about 23,000 years ago, cats about 10,000 years ago, and horses only about 6,000 years ago. To survive in the wild, it is key to develop a hypersensitive nature, to sense any disturbance “in the force”. They do this through their regular five senses and their extraordinary senses. Horses are more sensitive to light changes than we are, cats and dogs can see into the UV spectrum, and they all have hearing capabilities far beyond our own.

We may hear shuffling footsteps of a spirit while they can probably hear motionless ethereal breathing!

Animals are also more in tune with energy shifts such as people displaying fear, nervousness or aggression and they react accordingly. They can sense the energy being put out by the living and they are also more able to sense energy shifts from spirit.

What does this behavior look like in our animal companions?

  • Looking up at the ceiling or wall
  • Appearing like they are watching something unseen move in the room
  • Reluctance to enter or go into a room, space or location
  • Growling at “nothing”
  • Spooking in the same place for no reason
  • Sudden reactionary movement then running away (most common in cats, almost like they get touched, turn towards it, then run away)
  • Barking or meowing at nothing or while alone in the room
  • Behaving like they are greeting someone or being pet by an unseen person

This is a video of cats seeing something unexplained. *Keep in mind these are home videos and could be altered for effect or cats could have been given cat nip which makes them temporarily excitatory.

Don’t forget to try and debunk this behavior before assuming it is paranormal! Ensure your pet is not having any medical issues or there could be mice in the walls. If your cat is only acting bizarre at a wall in the same spot in the winter, then it likely is mice and not paranormal. Winter is the time of year rodents move into the wall spaces to stay warm and if I was a cat, this would definitely drive me nuts!

Who is visiting them?!

It can be an animal friend who has passed, a person who loved the pet or someone who lived in the home, or a spirit who is in the home unrelated to the pet. These are often children spirits who will play with the pets or family members.

The next time you are noticing your pet behaving oddly, keep a record of it including the location, time and behavior. Try to take a video. Check with your pet’s veterinarian for health issues. Get a location medium in to help read the location or try to communicate further yourself! Trust what you pick up!
